The Maryland Addiction and Behavioral-health Professionals Certification Board is a private, non-partisan corporation which offers voluntary international and state level credentials to the behavioral health worker.

The Board, comprised of certified and licensed professionals and peer recovery specialists throughout the state, implements standards, testing and training for certifying addiction counselors, co-occurring disorders professionals, criminal justice addictions professionals, clinical supervisors, and peer recovery specialists and their supervisors. It also approves providers of continuing education training in Maryland.

Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor

INITIAL CERTIFICATION:

300 clock hours specific to the four domains—

  1. Screening, Assessment, and Engagement

  2. Treatment Planning, Collaboration and Referral
  3. Counseling

  4. Professional and Ethical Responsibilities

Six of these hours must be in counselor-specific ethics training by an approved provider.

The in-service training maximum for CCDC is 75 hours. In-service training is defined as "training provided within an agency by an agency employee, which has been approved by MABPCB". Training provided within an agency by an outside consultant or professional is not considered as in-service, and is measured by the same standards as other general training hours.

RECERTIFICATION:

40 hours of MABPCB-approved addiction counselor specific continuing education earned every two years, 6 hours of which must be in professional ethics and responsibilities.

Certified Clinical Supervisor

INITIAL CERTIFICATION:

Applicant must hold a current and valid CCDC, CCJP or CCDP credential OR a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in human services at a Master’s level or higher.

30 hours of education specific to clinical supervision with a minimum of 4 hours in each domain—

  1. Counselor Development
  2. Professional & Ethical Standards
  3. Program Development & Quality Assurance
  4. Performance Evaluation
  5. Administration

Maximum in-service training hours for the CCS application is 5 hours. In-service training is defined as "training provided within an agency by an agency employee, which has been approved by MABPCB." Training provided within an agency by an outside consultant or professional is not considered as in-service, and is measured by the same standards as other general training hours.

RECERTIFICATION:

6 hours of MABPCB approved clinical supervisor specific education earned every two years, which may be part of the 40 hours obtained for the prerequisite credential.

Certified Co-Occuring Disorders Professional

INITIAL CERTIFICATION:

200 total hours. 140 hours must be in COD specific training (20 hours in each domain) that includes a focus on both substance use and mental disorders—

  1. Screening & Assessment
  2. Crisis Prevention & Management
  3. Treatment & Recovery Planning
  4. Counseling
  5. Management and Coordination of Care
  6. Education of the Person, Their Support System & the Community
  7. Professional Responsibility

Of the 200 hours, 30 hours must be in addiction specific training, including six hours of counselor specific ethics.

Of the 200 hours, 30 hours must be in mental health specific training.

Maximum in-service training hours for the CCDP application is 50 hours. In-service training is defined as "training provided within an agency by an agency employee, which has been approved by MABPCB." Training provided within an agency by an outside consultant or professional is not considered as in-service, and is measured by the same standards as other general training hours.

RECERTIFICATION:

40 hours of COD-specific continuing education earned every two years, 6 hours of which must be in counselor specific ethics.

Certified Criminal Justice Professional

INITIAL CERTIFICATION:

80-270 hours of education/training defined as formal, structured instruction in the form of workshops, seminars, institutes, in-services, college/university credit courses and distance learning.

The number of hours required for initial certification vary depending on the highest degree or level of education an applicant has completed—

  • High School/GED - 270 hours
  • AA/AS or Certified ADC Counselor - 200 hours
  • BA/BS or IC&RC Certified Reciprocal ADC Counselor - 150 hours
  • MA/MS or IC&RC Certified Supervisor ADC Counselor - 100 hours
  • Above Masters Level or IC&RC Certified Advanced ADC Counselor or Other Advanced Credential (i.e., NBCC, CRCC, NASW, MAC, etc.) - 80 hours.

Education/training must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within the IC&RC Criminal Justice Addictions Professional eight performance domains as they relate to adults and juveniles. A minimum of 10 hours are required in each of the eight domains. Six hours of education/training must be in professional ethics and responsibilities.

40 hours of continuing education earned every two years, 10 or which must be criminal justice specific and 30 of which must be training in the knowledge and skills related to chemical dependency counseling.

Certified Peer Recovery Specialist

INITIAL CERTIFICATION:

46 hours of documented behavioral health Peer specific continuing education provided by an MABPCB approved organizational provider within the following four domains—

  • Advocacy - 10 hours
  • Ethical Responsibility - 16 hours
  • Mentoring & Education - 10 hours
  • Wellness & Recovery - 10 hours

Up to 5 hours may be earned through online/webinar (non-interactive) education such as those offered on our site. All trainings for initial certification must be completed within the last 10 years. For more information on the 4 domains:

Applicants are allowed 12 in-service training hours as part of the 46 hours of training. In-service training is defined as "training provided within an agency by an agency employee, which has been approved by MABPCB." Training provided within an agency by an outside consultant or professional is not considered as in-service, and is measured by the same standards as other general training hours.

RECERTIFICATION:

20 hours of MABPCB approved peer recovery specialist specific education every two years, 6 of which are required to be earned in Ethical Responsibility training. The remaining hours are to be earned in related areas of behavioral health. (Ethical hours over multiple trainings will not be accepted). Up to 5 hours may be earned through online/webinar (non-interactive) education such as those offered on our site.
