About the Course

This course discusses common co-morbidities with substance use disorders (SUD). It includes: the connection between substance use disorders and mental illness, why there is a comorbidity between SUD and mental illness, approaches to diagnosis, treatments for SUD and mental health conditions, co-occurring SUD and physical comorbidities, the connection between SUD and HIV, why HIV screening is important, methods for HIV prevention and treatment for individuals with substance use disorders, achieving an AIDS-free generation, barriers to comprehensive treatment for co-occurring disorders, and where to get more information.

This course is based on the article, Common Comorbidities with Substance Use Disorders created by NIDA in 2018.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Allison Brown, LCSW 149014591

Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists,nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge the pervasive problem of co-occurring disorders and barriers to treatment.
  2. 2 Identify effective treatments for SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions
  3. 3 Summarize the connection between HIV and SUD, and preventions and treatment when these specific disorders co-occur.
