About the Course

This research article uses a systematic review of research on the efficacy of treatment for self-harm behavior and suicide attempts as well as depression in adolescents. The study examines variations of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as the possible benefits of combined self-driven and systems-driven approaches for reducing overall self-harm.

This course is based on the article, A Further Look at Therapeutic Interventions for Suicide Attempts and Self-Harm in Adolescents: An Updated Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials created by Udita Iyengar, PhD., et al. in 2018.

Udita Iyengar, PhD

Dr. Iyengar completed her PhD from University College London and is currently a project manager in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is overseeing a randomized controlled trial comparing intensive mental health intervention versus usual social care in Looked After Children. Dr. Iyengar is also a visiting lecturer at Roehampton University, and her academic interest include attachment, early childhood development, and the neurobiology of maternal behaviors.

Joan R. Asarnow, PhD.

Dr. Asarnow is Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and a clinical psychologist. Her current work focuses on interventions and service delivery strategies for improving health and mental health in youth, with an emphasis on suicide/suicide attempt prevention and depression. She has led efforts to disseminate evidence-based treatments for child and adolescent depression and suicide prevention, working across multiple service settings including emergency departments, primary care, mental health, and school settings.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.
