About the Course

This course examines vulnerability vs resilience to substance use of at-risk adolescents and whether child maltreatment and father involvement are factors. It includes: child maltreatment and adolescent substance use, the role of the timing of the maltreatment, father involvement, and other factors influencing adolescent substance use.

This course is based on the article, Vulnerability or resilience to early substance use among adolescents at risk-The roles of maltreatment and father involvement created by Susan Yoon, PhD.et al. in December of 2018.

Susan Yoon, PhD.

Dr. Yoon is an assistant professor in the College of Social Work, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. Her research seeks to promote resilience and well-being in children who have experienced childhood trauma, including child maltreatment. She has had more than 40 works published in peer reviewed journals.

Fei Pei, MSW, LSW

Fei Pei is a doctoral candidate and licensed social worker whose research aims to help vulnerable children, including maltreated and immigrant children, avoid negative developmental outcomes by using neighborhood resources. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Dalhee Yoon, MSW. PhD

Dalhee Yoon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at the College of Community and Public Affairs of Binghamton University the State University of New York. Dr. Yoon’s research investigates the impact of child maltreatment across a range of adolescent risk behaviors (e.g., substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms), with a specific focus on the role of peer relationships. Her work has been presented at several conferences and published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge that childhood maltreatment is a significant factor in vulnerability to early substance use among adolescents.
  2. 2 Identify that age at maltreatment and type of maltreatment affect risk of adolescent substance use.
  3. 3 Summarize the role of parent-child relationships for reduction of risk.
