About the Course

TIP 63 provides a clinical overview of three FDA-approved medications for the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) as well as addresses other strategies useful in the management of this condition. It is divided into 5 parts. The first provides a general overview to the medications used in treating OUD. Part 2 addresses OUD in medical care settings, while Part 3 focuses on more detailed information regarding medication management of OUD. Part 4 is for healthcare and addiction treatment professionals, and focuses on facilitating an interdisciplinary team approach to helping patients diagnosed with OUD. Finally, Part 5 provides resources related to OUD medications. This course is part 3 of a 3 part series.

Target Audience

This course is recommended for counselors, marriage and family therapists,nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physicians, psychologists and social workers who seek knowledge about medications for opioid use disorder. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe key terms related to Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
  2. 2 Discuss clinical considerations important to the assessment and treatment of OUD.
  3. 3 Discuss the neurochemistry and biology of OUD and the medications used to treat it.
  4. 4 Describe methods that mental healthcare professionals can facilitate treatment and recovery efforts for clients diagnosed with OUD.
