About the Course

The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between movement behaviors, loneliness, and sadness within Alaskan adolescents. Specifically, associations between meeting recommendations for movement behaviors with loneliness and sadness were examined using weighted logistic regression models, adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, and body mass index (BMI).

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Movement Behaviors and Perceived Loneliness and Sadness Within Alaskan Adolescents created by Ryan D. Burns, Ph.D. et al. in 2020.

Ryan D. Burns, Ph.D. (Health and Kinesiology)

Dr. Burns is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation. His research has included developing prediction models to estimate aerobic capacity in adolescents, developing optimal low back pain assessment in adolescents, cross-validating prediction models, modeling physical activity behaviors during physical education, and examining the efficacy of comprehensive school physical activity programming. Dr. Burns has given multiple presentations and has had his research published in several peer reviewed journals.

Yang Bai, Ph.D. (Health and Kinesiology)

Dr. Bai is an -Assistant Professor, Health and Kinesiology, University of Utah. His research areas include physical activity and fitness assessment and epidemiology, school-based youth activity and healthy eating promotion, validation of consumer and research activity monitors, and behavior change with technology. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers with an emphasis on those professionals working with Native American clients. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
