About the Course

This research intensive intermediate and above level course is tailored for professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in the intricate factors influencing individuals' wellbeing following a suicide attempt. Through a comprehensive analysis, we explore the pivotal role of disclosure to family, friends, and healthcare providers in fostering Posttraumatic Growth (PTG). We critically evaluate the impact of disclosure on PTG, taking into account the varying qualities of support received from familial and social networks. Additionally, we assess the effectiveness of social support mechanisms in facilitating PTG among suicide attempt survivors, while meticulously controlling for variables such as time since attempt and the quality of support. Drawing from contemporary research, including a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) study, we equip participants with insights to navigate complex therapeutic landscapes and empower survivors towards transformative growth amidst adversity.

Laura M. Frey, PhD - Family Sciences

Dr. Frey is an Associate Professor and CFT Program Director at University of Louisville. Dr. Frey’s primary interest is in the intersection of family processes and suicide prevention. Her research utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the role of stigma and family interactions following a loved one’s disclosure of suicidal ideation or behavior. Dr. Frey’s work has demonstrated links suggesting disclosure and subsequent family reaction predict depression symptoms and the interpersonal needs that predict the desire to die. She has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.

Christopher W. Drapeau, PhD, HSPP

Dr. Drapeau is the Executive Director of Prevention, Suicide Prevention and Crisis Response Division of Mental Health and Addiction in Indiana. He has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.

Kathryn Held, Psy.D., CADC III

Kathryn Held, Psy. D associate and CADC III, is an individual therapist at Visions adolescent treatment centers. With a decade of experience in the mental health field, Kathryn specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, OCD, and the OCD spectrum. Kathryn also has expertise in working with LGBTQ+ adolescents while navigating complex family systems. Her current research projects include adolescent suicide and the use of OCD art interventions in anxiety and OCD treatment. She is trained in CBT, ACT and Exposure and Response Prevention. Her empathetic and artistic approach helps support, educate, and instill agency in her clients. Prior to joining the Visions team, Kathryn worked in various treatment settings including detox, sober living, and as the Program Director of a dual diagnosis outpatient treatment center.
