About the Course

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered approach to helping people change behaviors to meet their goals. Because MI works where the client “is,” it isn’t curriculum-driven. Yet, the four tasks (engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning) provide a road map to guide the practice of MI. The practitioner guides the client toward their goals for change, including the development of a specific and achievable plan. While these tasks seem linear, they are not discrete phases. This presentation will explore and discuss key components and challenges in each MI process to help improve one’s practice, particularly in light of Miller and Rollnick’s newest edition of Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, Four Tasks of Motivational Interviewing created by Angela Wood in 2024.
