About the Course

This course explores delay discounting, a behavioral economic measure of preference for immediate versus delayed rewards, across a range of established and proposed behavioral addictions. Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 78 studies, participants will examine patterns of steep discounting in behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, food addiction, and others. The course also highlights variability across studies, identifies research gaps, and discusses implications for future addiction research.

This course is based on the reading online article, Delay Discounting in Established and Proposed Behavioral Addictions created by Sarah Weinsztok, PhD et al in 2021.

Sarah Weinsztok is a researcher at the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment at the University of Kansas. Her work focuses on behavioral economics and addiction science. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Sarah Brassard, PhD Student

Sarah Brassard is a researcher at the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research at McMaster University. She specializes in behavioral addictions and neuropsychological processes. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Barbara McMillan, BA, MS, EdD, LPC has 35 years of experience as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in mental health and substance abuse programs. She holds degrees in psychology and education, and has been a licensed professional counselor and supervising counselor for many years. After 18 years in various roles in private and public mental health settings, she became a full-time college psychology and sociology instructor.
