About the Event

Although CBT techniques are widely used across clinical settings, research indicates that treatment outcomes are less favorable when essential therapist competencies are underdeveloped. This session focuses on the general CBT skills that support effective therapy, including structuring sessions, maintaining focus despite disruptions, fostering collaboration, and using Socratic questioning and guided discovery. Emphasis is placed on how these competencies enhance engagement and improve clinical outcomes.

John Ludgate

John Ludgate, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, who has worked as a psychotherapist for more than 30 years and specializes in treating mood, anxiety, relationship, and psychosexual disorders. As well as having an active clinical practice, he is involved in training and supervision in CBT. Dr. Ludgate has written numerous journal articles and book chapters in the field of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Anxiety and Depression, most recently contributing a chapter on Relapse Prevention to the Handbook of CBT (2021) published by the American Psychological Association. He has presented many seminars and workshops on cognitive behavioral approaches, both nationally and internationally.

This live interactive webinar is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's and Addiction Professionals.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Apply strategies for structuring CBT sessions and maintaining structure in the presence of clinical disruptions.
  2. 2 Describe and demonstrate methods for establishing and maintaining a collaborative therapeutic relationship.
  3. 3 Utilize Socratic questioning and guided discovery to support client insight and behavior change.
