About the Course

This course is a systematic review of 51 studies on gambling and pathological gambling using national datasets from NESARC. It includes: definitions of recreational and problem gambling, gambling subtypes, sociodemographics and potential risk factors, psychiatric comorbidities, and physical health and chronic medical conditions.

This course is based on the article, A systematic review of gambling-related findings from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions created by Jasmine M. Y. Loo, PhD and Shane W. Kraus, PhD in 2019.

Jasmine M. Y. Loo, PhD

Dr Jasmine May-Yee Loo is currently a Research Analyst at The Salvation Army Australia and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer (psychologist) at Monash University Malaysia. Her work has been published and presented in international journals and conferences. She worked as a Visiting Research Scientist at Yale University, New Haven, US. She has conducted research work at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and has previously lectured at Queensland University of Technology and HELP University. Her specializations have drawn considerable interest from governmental agencies and international organizations in the gaming industry. Dr. Loo is an advocate for responsible gambling and public policy initiatives.

Shane W. Kraus, PhD

Dr. Kraus is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is interested in the study of psychopathology, sexual trauma, substance use disorders and gambling disorder and is particularly interested in using behavioral, epidemiological, and neurobiological methods to assess factors that contribute to the development of addictive behaviors and other co-occurring psychiatric disorders among US military veterans and other high-risk groups. He is piloting brief mindfulness-based interventions for gambling disorder and compulsive sexual behaviors. Dr. Kraus's gambling research is also exploring effective screening approaches for identifying individuals with problem gambling. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
