Sexual Trauma History Is Associated With Reduced Orbitofrontal Network Strength in Substance-Dependent Women

About the Course

This study examined differences in intrinsic brain networks in a group of women with substance use disorder and trauma exposure. PTSD diagnosis was associated with reduced functional connectivity of an orbitofrontal network with the precuneus, mid-posterior insula, lateral prefrontal cortex and angular gyrus. OFC network strength was inversely associated with sexual violence exposure over-and-above the contribution of PTSD status alone. These findings may inform treatment response in this subpopulation.

Dr. Poppa's research focuses on functional organization of the insular cortex, including the vagus nerve, nociception and pain, predictive coding theories, translational psychiatry and mechanisms of psychosomatic disorders. She has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.

Vita Droutman, PhD

Dr. Droutman is a Lecturer at the Department of Psychology, University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her research focuses on cognitive neuroscience and she has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.

Hana Kuc is a Licensed Mental Heath counselor and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor who has been working in the field for 13 years. In that time she has worked as a counselor, therapist, educator and director. Hana has specialized in working with clients on medication assisted treatment, who are in recovery from opiates, and are also diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
