About the Course

The health risks of smoking are clear, and market and regulatory efforts have led to the rise of smokeless, heated, and vaping nicotine products. Since smoking-related diseases are caused by tobacco combustion and nicotine addiction keeps people using tobacco, understanding nicotine addiction's biology and behavior is key to improving treatments. This review covers the latest research on treating nicotine addiction, especially from cigarettes, and discusses effective methods for adult smokers and policies to prevent youth nicotine use, highlighting new areas for future research.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Current Advances in Research in Treatment and Recovery: Nicotine Addiction created by Judith J. Prochaska et al in 2019.

Judith J. Prochaska

Dr. Judith J. Prochaska is a prominent researcher in the field of public health, specializing in tobacco cessation, nicotine addiction, and behavioral change. She is a professor of medicine at Stanford University and a member of the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Her work focuses on developing and testing interventions to help people quit smoking, especially among high-risk populations.

Danny also has 10+ years of experience working with individuals diagnosed with intellectual disability and substance use. Danny’s professional interests include addictions/recovery, intellectual disability, foster care, military, trauma, and domestic violence.
